The Art of Colour
6 sessions
Course Leader
Sally Berridge 5472 4048
Course Outline
This short course is based on the colour theories of Johannes Itten, an artist of the Bauhaus. He particularly focused on the tension between the objective laws of colour (wavelength, etc.) and the subjectivity of personal experience in viewing colours and their interactions. In this class we will look at both the objective and subjective through our own experiences of painting with colour. In particular we will look at primary, secondary and tertiary colours and how they relate to one another: hue; light-dark; cold-warm; and complementary colours.
By the end of the course you will have a deeper understanding of how colours work with and against each other, and this knowledge can be used in painting, design, handcrafts, room furnishings, gardens or any other activity that involves colour.
Entry Criterion
All you need is an ability to draw 1cm squares in pencil, and then paint them in gouache (water-based paint).
