Course Outline
A current affairs discussion group that includes current developments in politics, finance, health, education, human rights, science, business, agriculture, environment – just about anything that interests participants that has appeared in the media.
Entry Criterion
An interest in current affairs. Basic level computer skills and an internet connection will aid communication between participants. Ability to present subjects for discussion. Tolerance of other points of view and a sense of humour.
Meeting Time
1.30 pm to 3.30 pm each second, third and fourth Friday of the month commencing 10 February.

U3A Office.
Propaganda Techniques

Course Outline
Propaganda uses information (words, images, sounds, etc) to manipulate people’s behaviour or beliefs. The target of a successful propagandist will feel that s/he has made a voluntary choice, even though s/he was never given a real chance to do so. The forum provides a framework for countering propaganda.
Entry Criterion
An interest in countering propaganda and to be interactive in the group.

Understanding Your Local Council

Course Outline
This discussion group will cover the operations of Mount Alexander Shire Council: what regulations it works under; the annual processes; the budget and where it goes; how rates are set and how to appeal; State required work – by-laws, planning, building health, emergency management; gauging community input; developing strategic plans for areas of interest – sport, arts, environment, heritage; how council works with other organisations and governments. Note: This is not a vehicle for debating issues.

An interest in local government and active discussion.
