Mount Alexander Shire is pleased to support the following events for the
2011 Seniors Festival. We
value our seniors community and hope you enjoy
the Festival events here and the many offered across the State.


MAYORS MESSAGE
Mount Alexander Shire has a thriving and growing seniors community, which is vibrant and involved in all aspects of Mount Alexander’s community life. Staying active and socially engaged with your local community has been shown to be of enormous benefit in keeping people healthy, both physically and mentally.
To celebrate the huge contribution you make to Mount Alexander, we are proud to support and showcase these events during the Mount Alexander Seniors Festival 2011. This year we have a range of new and exciting events, as well as some of the regular community events. Enjoy a trip around the local wineries, a day at the Seniors Race Day Bendigo, catch a classic movie at Metcalfe, or join one of the local walking or Tai Chi groups. We hope you enjoy the celebrations.

THURSDAY 29 SEPTEMBER

COUNTRY CONCERT SERIES—DUSTY, DORIS AND ME
Wendy Stapleton will perform a range of classic songs from Dusty Springfield including I Only Want To Be With You and I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself. Wendy will also perform Doris Day songs from the movie musicals ‘Calamity
Jane’ and ‘Love Me or Leave Me’ and more.
Venue: Castlemaine Town Hall, Frederick Street

COME AND TRY ACTIVITIES
There are regular groups of lifestyle activities that are held on a weekly basis throughout the Town. Castlemaine Health runs Tai Chi and a Walking group through Castlemaine District Community Health. Come along and join in these activities.
MONDAY 3 OCTOBER
TAI CHI
Tai Chi is a gentle and relaxing exercise. The group is facilitated by a physiotherapist from Castlemaine District Community Health.
Venue: Is dependent on the weather it will either be held in the
Botanical Gardens or at the Uniting Church Hall.

TUESDAY 4 OCTOBER AND THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER
WALK IN THE CASTLEMAINE GARDENS
Join in the walk at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens with the social
walking group. Walk as far as you like then have morning tea. A community nurse is available to take blood pressure and pulse checks.

SATURDAY 8 OCTOBER
BEFORE CASTLEMAINE

Dr Julian Hollis will guide you through local geological highlights within the town including the anticlincal fold and Kalimna Point. This is a 3 km walk that is expected to take 2-3 hours, so grab your family and friends and jo in th is u nu sua l an d int e re st in g ou t ing.

OLD TIME DANCE

The perennial favourite the old time dance for those who enjoy favourites such as the Parma Waltz, the Killarney and so many more. A continuous afternoon tea is provided. Come along and enjoy the wonderful music provided by the Family Rhythm Band.

MONDAY 3 OCTOBER
MOUNT ALEXANDER SHIRE SENIORS FESTIVAL LAUNCH

Lynne Landy will launch the Seniors Festival for 2011.
Her career as a journalist spans many years and she has been involved with many major publications. She is the wife of the former Governor of Victoria John Landy. Lynne Landy also has a background in fashion / textiles /
marketing and media, is a supporter of volunteers, has an
interest the visual and performing arts and is a keen embroiderer.
Come and join us at the Art Gallery to hear about the Seniors Festival and to hear about Lynne Landy’s varied and interesting life.

BINGO FUNDRAISER

Come and join in a fund raising afternoon with the funds collected to be donated to the Alexander Club. Come along and have a game of bingo and check out the Trading table while you are there. Afternoon tea is provided.

TUESDAY 4 OCTOBER
MOVIES @ METCALFE

Join in for a cuppa and enjoy the morning movie - Calamity Jane followed by a bbq lunch at 12.00. Stay for the afternoon movie Please Don’t Eat The Daisies which starts screening at 1.00pm. If you can’t spend the day drop by and join the group for the morning movie and lunch or the afternoon film and stay for afternoon tea.

Time: 10.00am—4.00pm
Cost: $8.00 for the day; $5.00 for the morning movie and lunch only or the afternoon tea and movie only

WEDNESDAY 5 OCTOBER VENTURE TO THE VINEYARDS

First stop will be at the Jindara Springs Winery where you can partake in nibbles and taste their wines produced from grapes grown in lean, granite soils. From there the bus will meander to Bress Winery where you will be shown how they produce their wine from grapes grown using biodynamic farming
practices and enjoy pizza for lunch. The bus will head back into Castlemaine where you have the option of joining a guided tour of the Castlemaine township or take a look at the Buda Historic Home ($8.00) and Garden; Castlemaine Art Gallery and Museum ($3.00) - when booking
please confirm which tour you would like. Meet at the Castlemaine Railway
Station—the bus will leave at 10.20am precisely

SENIORS RACE DAY AT THE BENDIGO JOCKEY CLUB

Come along and join in a day at the races. There is a 2 course dining package available through the Silks Restaurant or take along a picnic lunch.
Time: Bus departs from the Marketing Building at 10.45 and will return at 6.00pm

FREE entry for those with a Seniors Card to the racetrack

FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER HOY AFTERNOON

Hoy is a simple bingo like game to play in groups from 2 people upwards. The idea is for someone to match all their cards on their sheet to the cards the dealer turns over to become a winner. This event is sponsored by the Castlemaine and Chewton Senior Citizens Centres.
Time: 1.30pm

THURSDAY 13 OCTOBER
SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY
Sentimental Journey is a trip down Memory lane with a touch of comedy. The USA, Brazil, England, France and other exotic locations have all pro- duced golden hit songs through the years. Come with us on our fun filled journey around the world as we sing a long, have some laughs and enjoy our time together.
This is a special concert for the Seniors in the Shire who have been affected by the recent floods in the Shire. For those in the outlying areas we are able to provide transport to the Venue.
